Iconography literally means "writing of images" It can refer to both the content, or subject of an artwork, and the study of content within the art piece. In the glossary of our text the term is defined as "both the content, or subject, of an artwork and to the study of content in art. It also includes the study of the symbolic, often religious, meaning of objects, persons, or events depicted in works of art."
2 Mesopotamian examples:
The Head of Akkadian ruler, Nineveh. This facial remains of a full statue of an Akkadian King stands out in comparison to other people because of it being one of the first known life-sized images of a king. It is, or was, a royal "portrait" of a person of great importance. The artist captured the majestic serenity, dignity, and authority of the ruler. The distinctive features of the king was captured in the texture of the curly beard and also with the contrast of hair textures. Most importantly he is shown as a god with the thorned helmet.
The victory stele of Naram-Sin is made of pink sandstone and is on a stone slab. It depicts the god-like sovereignty of a king, Naram-Sin is the ruler who defeats the Lullubi people of Iranian mountains. The king on the sandstone piece is larger than other people and also has a horned hat which the other people do not wear. The king-like figure is also at the top of the piece presenting his domination to the peoples below him.
2 Egyptian examples:
Khafre, from Gizeh, Egypt, Dynasty IV. This Egyptian statue made of diorite shows the king/pharaoh enthroned and in a rigid seated pose. Diorite is an extremely hard and dark stone, and was brought to Egypt from about 400 miles away. Only the gods of the Egyptian culture would have been carved in diorite. The ruler is seen with the falcon god Horus upon his head, lotus and papyrus plants between is legs and most importantly, he has a flawless body and ageless face. The Egyptian used ideal proportions and generalized characteristics for all pharaohs/kings. The people expect the pharaoh/king to be depicted like a god-like being.
Great Sphinx (with pyramid of Khafre in the background). This gigantic rock cutaway is the larges in ancient Egyptian art. The Sphinx is a lion with a pharaohs head. This animal and human connection is an example of Egyptian anthology of how humans can be god-like, or extraordinary.

interestingly enough.
school is out for the next 6 weeks. i hope to do at least 25 decent art projects, a few abstract, and at least a couple in colour.
I'm also about to sell the Kawasaki. i posted her, and 2 people emailed me about it. so i called both, the first number was not working, and then i called the second. he says he is definitely interested and he wants to pick her up on Saturday for 2860. we'll see. . .
at work last night, i did some mega calculations that i otherwise would not have thought about unless i bought the Kawasaki first, with a few "minor" problems and doing work on Alex's VRT 250cc Honda bike. i calculated the tires, oil filter and oil stuff and other basic maintainence items. i felt the last thing i bought for the Kawasaki was a total rip off. 73$ for a battery. a battery that i had to put in. thats a bloody rip!! the blue truck was 83 but the worker dude put it in. i'm so done with used vessels. i'm not down with sporty or flashy vessels anymore. im at the point where i'm only down for something that is minimal in cost and easy to fix. im only down for spending money on my brain, schooling and art stuffs. it is really hard to fix something with a computer and adjustments and other bullshit. (the guy i sold algeapea to today told be that at 14,000 miles she is going to need a valve adjustment and that runs about 400$ but he has a buddy that will hook him up on that. otherwise he would not buy my bike. if he is right, i feel the bike is keeping me back from actualizing this years goal)
**edit**
oiy!! the Kawasaki is sold!! to the first guy who paid what i asked for, but i brought it down to Huntington beach. i emailed the first guy that his or my phone was not working and to call me back on my house phone number. if i can wake up today at around 9 am i will go to the Honda shop and talk to them about the Honda rebel. i hope i have enough for it. anyhoo, just because i sold the Kawasaki, does not mean i do not still love motorcycles. i love motorcycles. it is my underground culture. my statement to society, and hopefully a gift to my small pocket. frankly i love 2 wheels, but i don't like that feeling i got with algeapea that something more expensive was en crouching from the future to my present. also, i'm very very very satisfied at how fast she sold on craigs list. it wasn't even 24hours since i posted her.
its time to start living and not having to feel that i am being retarded-ly impatient and stupid again about another vessel. this time, i believe i looked at the bigger picture correctly and took the time to see what i am getting myself and my small budget into. i did this partly because i am trying to save, but primarily because Alex is a penny pincher and i see how she gets away with a 17$ oil change/tune-up buy mine on the other hand costs about 100$. also, i sick of having to run it by her why i have to spend this much on the bike. its retarded. smaller amount things i dont. she's adamant about doing working work on her bike herself (well, technically that means i am being recruited and im doing the "dirty" work) and not the shop mechanics. also, through her bike, i see how simplistic the 250cc setup is and that it packs enough power to go up and down the free, and across pretty ugly distances. so i want to start doing what she is doing.
anyhoo. too much excitement for one day. its just sick i tell you.
